Morocco: where we are heading

Morocco, the meeting of European, African and the Muslim worlds: a mix of Arabs, Berbers, traders and invaders.

The Imazighen, also known as the Berbers, are among the original peoples of North Africa. Their myths, legends and history span 9000 years. Berber empires developed inland and were Muslim. Judaism continued to be practised and the Sunni Islam majority gradually took on a Berber hue with its brotherhoods, zaouias, marabouts and rituals. The Berber culture has a strong link to their land, a sense of community, hospitality, sharing food and a specific relationship with spirituality.
